This is the ‘El Otro Tom’ trailer:
A film about ADHD and the difficulties of emigration
Almost 7% (6.8%) of Spanish children suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although only 3% are diagnosed and 1% receive treatment.
‘The other Tom’ treats, with excellent sensitivity, the personal, family, educational and medical consequences of ADHD sufferers. An accident with the medication prescribed to Tom, for which they have to go to the emergency room, is the turning point for the mother (Elena) to become alert to the risks of the medication.
The overly medicalized treatment of ADHD sufferers, especially in the US, is questioned in the film. The lack of professional ethics and the interests of the big pharmaceutical companies have caused excessive hyperpharmacology, which is the subject of discussion throughout the film, especially by the mother, in front of the educational, health and social services professionals, who threaten to remove Elena, an emigrant single mother, looks after her.
the movie ‘L’Altre Tom’ gives a voice to all patients and families who suffer from ADHD and encourages debate on how to treat it. And it also reflects the economic precariousness and misunderstanding of the environment, all the while highlighting the unfriendly side of Mexican emigration to the United States.
