Blepharoplasty or correction of the drooping eyelid is one of the most frequent operations and its purpose is not only aesthetic since the field of vision is recovered. In addition, there are other interventions performed by ophthalmic surgeons that correct pathologies in the area surrounding the eyes. This is oculoplasty.

Oculoplasty is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that specifically deals with the structures that protect and surround the eye area: the eyelid, the tear ducts, the eyebrows and the eye socket.
“The main purpose is to solve medical problems, but allowing at the same time solve more aesthetic aspects in these areas of the face”indicates the doctor Javier Fernández-Vega, director of the Oculoplasty unit of Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute.
The most common problems that lead patients to undergo this type of surgery are usually related to the eyelids due to aging.
“From the age of 40, looseness or flaccidity occurs in the tissues, a loss of collagen that causes the skin to stretch, wrinkles appear and we lose our field of vision“, with the drooping of the eyelid, points out the ophthalmologist.
Other frequent problems are alterations in the position of the eyelids, tearing due to obstruction of the tear duct and eyelid tumors, very common in Spain due to exposure to the sun.
For all this, the right specialist to do this type of intervention is the ophthalmologist.
Blepharoplasty, the star operation of oculoplasties
One of the most requested oculoplastic surgeries is blepharoplasty.
The doctor Michel Tazartes, from the Oculoplastic Unit of Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Instituteexplains that it is a technique that removes excess skin and fat in the periocular area.
“The suture used to close the wound is subcuticular, so it leaves virtually no mark and is removed 8 or 10 days after the operation. It is a surgery with quick and direct results”indicates
This operation, which can be on the upper, lower or all four eyelids simultaneously, aims to reposition the tissues in this area and, at the same time, recover a more rejuvenated appearance, since drooping eyebrows can be treated at the same time.
Although their intervention leads to an aesthetic improvement to the periocular structures, the experts stress the importance of putting themselves in the hands of an ophthalmologist for this practice.
“In addition to cosmetic surgery, complex problems of the orbit such as inflammation, tumor or sequelae of trauma are also treated. It is important that patients go to ophthalmologists specializing in the eyelids who know the complex anatomy of this area and its intimate relationship with the eye.” concludes ophthalmologist Tazartes.
