Seven tips to keep your brain healthy

More than 120,000 new cases of stroke, Alzheimer’s and epilepsy could be prevented by practicing brain-healthy habits. The Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) offers seven tips to take care of our brain health.

With the aim of promoting social awareness about the importance of taking care of our brain and maintaining good health, the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) celebrates Brain Week (October 31 to November 4), an initiative for prevent neurological diseases i live without disability.

The president of the SEN, José Miguel Láineznext to the doctor and vice-president of the SEN, Jesús Portathey point seven brain-healthy tips in order to prevent many neurological diseases:

  • Do activities that stimulate brain activity and keep you mentally active: reading, writing, memorizing, participating in board games, doing manual activities, learning a new language, doing crossword puzzles…
  • Perform some kind of regular physical activity: practice a sport or take one or two daily walks of at least 30 minutes.
  • Strengthen social and emotional relationships: avoid isolation, social isolation and stress.
  • keep one healthy diet: avoid excess animal fat and salt and encourage the consumption of fruit and vegetables.
  • follow some healthy lifestyle habits: do not consume alcohol, tobacco and drugs, in addition to sleeping eight hours a day.
  • bring one control of hypertensionas it is the main risk factor for cerebrovascular diseases (such as stroke).
  • Protect the brain against physical aggression from the outside: always use a seat belt in vehicles and a helmet when traveling by motorcycle.

The importance of taking care of the health of our brain

The latest data from National Institute of Statistics (INE) mean that the average life expectancy in Spain is 83 years, but the healthy life expectancy (understood as the absence of disability), it only reaches the 70 years.

For its part, the SEN warns that nine of the fifteen most common diseases among people with a recognized disability are neurological.

The alzheimerthe parkinson’s or the SHE they lead the classification without leaving out others such as migraine, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis…

He also points out that, from the age of 50, more than 50% of the population already suffers from a chronic disease. And neurological diseases are responsible for the 44% of the disability and of 50% of the lost years due to disability

However, more than 120,000 new cases of stroke, alzheimer’s and epilepsy could be prevented by following the brain health care habits mentioned above.

“As we all know that we need to spend time exercising to improve our physical health, we should all also know that we need to spend time improving our brain health,” explains Dr. Láinez.

Finally, the medical society explains that neurological diseases are responsible for the 23% of the years of life lost by premature death and are the causes of 19% of the dead that occur every year in Spain.

Estimates indicate that by 2050 the incidence of Alzheimer’s will triple and that over the next 10 years, stroke deaths will increase by 45% and the number of disabled stroke survivors by 25%, according to the SEN.

“It must be everyone’s responsibility to think that, despite aging, it is necessary to try to maintain a good state of brain health that allows us to live with the best possible quality of life,” concludes neurologist José Miguel Láinez.
