The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off in Super Bowl LVII, a game that will pit coach Andy Reid (Chiefs) against his team (Eagles) and feature two black starting quarterbacks for the first time time in history of the Super Bowl.
This will be Patrick Mahomes’ third Super Bowl appearance in his five seasons as Kansas City’s starter, while Jalen Hurts has led the Eagles to the Super Bowl in his second full season as the starting quarterback.
Mahomes sprained his right ankle on Jan. 21 in Kansas City’s divisional-round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. While he passed for 326 yards in Sunday’s 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game, he played nimbly for a first-and-ten on the play that set up the game-winning field goal , Mahomes was clearly playing in pain and hobbled at times throughout the game.
Hurts, a right-handed quarterback, sprained his hamstring in December and missed two regular-season games. He’s back for the Eagles’ final regular-season game and their two postseason games, but he said his man isn’t 100 percent healthy.
Each team entered the postseason as the top seed in their respective conferences, but advanced to the Super Bowl under very different circumstances.
The Eagles were in control for most of their 31-7 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game after both starter Brock Purdy and backup Josh Johnson, the third and fourth marshal of the team this season, they were injured.
Kansas City’s AFC Championship Game against the Bengals, on the other hand, came down to the final seconds. On the final drive, a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty was called against the Bengals, putting Kansas City in position to kick a game-winning 45-yard field goal with three seconds remaining.
The Super Bowl matchup between Kansas City and Philadelphia should pit a Chiefs team that relies on its aggressive passing game against an Eagles team that relies on its incredible ground game. Pat Mahomes led the league in passing this season, racking up more than 5,000 rushing yards during the regular season, en route to another MVP campaign as the Chiefs’ quarterback. On the other hand, against the 49ers, both Jalen Hurts and the Eagles set records for rushing touchdowns this season: 15 for Hurts and 39 for the team.
Finally, the soon-to-be Hall-of-Famers Kelce brothers (Philadelphia center Jason and Kansas City tight end Travis) will become the first set of brothers to play one-on-one ‘other in the Super Bowl.
