Box office review: Ant-Man disappoints

The third installment of Ant-Man, and the umpteenth in the Marvel universe, accumulates 419.5 million at the worldwide box office. Some modest figures for what is usual in the studio and which confirm a recent trend that could alter some future plans.

Sooner or later it had to happen. The box office trajectory of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe will go down in history as the first (and we’ll see who can replicate such a thing) mega-franchise. with 28,718 crore combined box officeso far, over the course of 31 films, is the biggest commercial event ever seen in the medium. Not forgetting that, despite that Iron Man and its sequel were huge hits, Marvel started its journey with two very lukewarm results (Thor i captain america) and directly a failure (The Incredible Hulk). The turning point would come with the historic box office of The Avengerstime the ban was opened: Iron Man 3 making more than 1200 million, you know how Thor or captain america increasing benefits, television series and even the competition going quickly and without contemplations to his particular justice league.

From that moment on, Marvel Studios went on to show that its success did not mean false steps: Guardians, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel… All went to extraordinary box office. Until the Avengers phase was closed and the so-called Phase 4 began. Since then, and without forgetting the pandemic, Marvel has had a huge success (the third installment of Spider-Man, of course ), three notables (Doctor Strange, Thor and Black Panther) and a few doubts. And among them the one that concerns us: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

With 419.5 million at the worldwide box office, and already in considerable decline in its ability to continue generating sales, the third installment of Ant-Man does not seem to be very clear whether it will reach the final 500 million. Seeing the declines in North America, where it accumulates 186.7 million, and the international ones, with 232.7, its end seems to suffer a lot to reach this numerical hinge of 500 million. Surpassing 200 at home, and touching 300 away, the end could be between 470 and 500 million.

Is it a failure? To begin with, it is a drop compared to the arc drawn by the previous ones (519.3 and 622.6 million at the worldwide box office), always considering that it is a slightly smaller character (without seconds) and that these figures were evidence of the power Marvel commercial. But the tonic seen with Black Widow (considering already the loss due to the pandemic), Shang-Chi i eternalwhich are still the studio’s new bets, they can already begin to generate changes in the studio’s commercial strategy.

On the other hand, let’s not forget the sequel Avatarso with 2281.9 he has definitely left behind a Titanic to be crowned as the third most successful film in history (unadjusted). The aforementioned Titanicprobably the biggest real hit in the history of cinema, totals 59.8 million in its 25th anniversary re-release, bringing its total to 2254.4 million. James Cameron adds almost 7500 million between the 3 films he contributes to the historical Top 4. incredible
